Today we talked a bit more about geometry with lesson 31 and 32. There were A LOT of vocabulary terms that the students should read through again to make sure they are familiar with. We learned about parallel lines and segments, perpendicular lines and segments and intersecting lines and segments as well as angles, sides, vertices and polygons--specifically what makes something a polygon (more than three segments that enclose an area AND it has to be flat (not 3-D).
*we also went through the homework and I collected their tests :) Homework: Lesson 31--ODD questions only and Lesson 32--EVEN questions only.

Sorry for the delay in this post! On Wednesday we spent the whole hour going over homework (students actually had 4-5 questions they wanted to review which was great!) and then we also worked on Investigation #3 from the tests and worksheets book. We talked a lot about fractions and how we look to the denominator to figure out how many equal groups we need. So, if we had a total of 24 people and we wanted to know what 1/8th of that total would be, we would look at the denominator--8--and divide the total number--24--by 8 to get 8 equal groups of 3. So 1/8th of 24 would be 3! Investigation #3 focused on 1/3rds, 1/5ths and 1/8ths as well as the fractions from Investigation #2 (1/4th, 1/2, and 1/10ths). We started solving the problems that corresponded with the Investigation #3 but we did not finish.
Homework: Finish the Investigation #3 questions (using your manipulatives would help you a lot!) and complete TEST #5. Please place the test in a sealed envelope and sign on the envelope as well. As always, I'll grade the tests :) Class started by my checking their homework (lesson 27 and 28 AND test corrections) while they did their mental math exercises for lesson 29. We then went over the homework and worked on a few problems before learning about multiplication by 10s and 100s (lesson 29) and recognizing fractions and percentages based on diagrams (lesson 30). With multiplying by 10s and 100s we focused on the how you can allow the zeros to "hang out" and then tack them on to the solution later--for example--to solve 27 x 300 you would multiply 27 by 3 and then tack on two zeros. For recognizing fractions and percents we looked at how many pieces made up the whole shape (our denominator) and then looked at how many were either shaded or unshadded depending on the question that was asked (our numerator).
Homework: Lesson 29 and 30 ODD questions only. Today we will start class off by looking over their graded tests and answering any questions they may have. Then we will go over lesson 26 homework assignment and answer any questions from there before moving onto lesson 27. Students will do the warm-up exercise for lesson 27 and then we will talk about the lesson and do the practice section for it as well as learn lesson 28 and do the practice section for 28.
Homework: Lesson 27 and 28 EVEN questions only for both lessons. Today we started class by going over questions from the homework assignment of lesson 25 and then having the students turn in test #4. We then looked over lesson 26 which was all about the algorithm for long-division (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) as well as how to check to see if a quotient for a division problem is correct by multiplying the factors and then adding the remainder (if there is one). We did a lot of class practice on this and ended up devoting the rest of the class period to reinforce the lesson because students seemed to struggle with it. If/When helping with the homework, please use the division algorithm to make sure they remember the steps!
Homework: ALL of lesson 26. If your student is struggling with something in particular, be it division, subtraction, addition or multiplication, please let me know and I'll try and find some additional practice for them! Unfortunately I do not have the time to tutor students outside of class but there are some great teachers at Brighton who do offer tutoring in math! Just email Mrs. Kelso and she'll let you know who is available and when. As always, if a student needs help solving a problem I am more than happy to go over it in class or via the phone/email if need be :) We went over test corrections and homework questions and students did the warm-up for lesson 25. We then focused on lesson 25 and how to find the factors for a product given (for example, you are given the number 4--that's the product. Find it's factors....so ?x?=4. 1x4=4 and 2x2=4 so your factors for 4 are 1, 2, 4. We then did a few word problems from previous lessons to give students more practice with them and then I told the students what their next test would be over.
Homework: Lesson 25 Odd Only. TEST #4!!! Please place the finished test in an envelope. We started off class by doing the lesson warm-up for lesson 23 and I checked their homework while they worked on it. Some students were missing signatures/had questionable "signatures" on their assignments so please make sure they get those looked over and graded for full credit :) I also passed back their test #3.
We went over a few questions from lesson 22 and we did the lesson content for 23 (how to recognize if a fraction is equal to, less than or greater than 1/2) and the lesson practice for it as well. We then moved on to lesson 23 where we talked when an equation had a parenthesis in it that you had to solve whatever is in the parenthesis before solving the rest of the problem. Homework: TEST CORRECTIONS!!! If a problem was circled on their test, please make sure the student goes back and makes the corrections. If they don't know where to find the answer, the lesson number is printed just below the question number so they can review the lesson for assistance. Lesson 23 and lesson 24 ODD questions only is also assigned as homework. We started class by collecting the tests and going over any questions from the homework assignment. We actually took the time to go over a section of the Investigation #2 homework so that we could make sure everyone understood the material. We then talked about lesson 21 with word problems about equal groups and how the format for the equations for those problems involve multiplication. It took a lot of time to get the students to write the equations in the correct format so please make sure they are doing it correctly on their homework :)
We then talked about division with remainders in Lesson 22 and I assigned the homework after doing a few practices. Homework: Lesson 21 ODD questions only and Lesson 22 Even questions Today we focused A LOT on fractions: what a fraction is, how we can figure out a fraction of a whole number--like 1/10th of 30, and how we can add up fractions to equal bigger numbers--like 1/4th plus 1/4th equals 1/2. We spent a lot of time going through Investigation #2 in the Textbook and students made fraction manipulatives to help them better understand the concepts, especially when adding and comparing fractions together. We ended class by talking about test #3 and what to expect.
Homework: Finish the Investigation #2 (in the Textbook) by completing questions 13-25. You can use your fraction manipulatives to help you answer those questions! ALSO, test #3 is DUE ON WEDNESDAY! You can find Test #3 in your Tests and Worksheets booklet. Parents, please make sure to supervise your student while taking the test. As a reminder, students are not allowed to use a calculator, notes, book, a friend/parent, etc.. The test should be completed in one sitting and then placed in an envelope that you seal and sign. I will be grading the tests so no need to grade it yourself unless you want to know right away how they did :) Please encourage your student to look over lessons 1-15 as this will be what they are tested over! As always, if you have any questions, please let me know. Today in class, we went over the test and answered questions and then students worked on the Warm-Up for lesson 19 while I checked their homework for completion. There were no questions over the homework assignment for lesson 17 and 18 so we moved on to talking about division (lesson 19). We worked through the problems and focused on how division relates to multiplication (inverse operations, just like subtraction is related to addition!). We then focused on the terms in division (dividend, divisor, quotient) and the three ways to write a division equation (lesson 20). We ended class by going over the lesson practice for lesson 20 and then assigning the homework.
Homework: Lesson 19 and 20 ODD questions only. ALSO please make sure to bring your Worksheets and Tests booklet to class on Monday (or just bring the pages that correspond with investigation #2). On Monday we will do Investigation #2 as well as a division dice activity and the homework will be test#3 (due on Wednesday) which will cover material from lesson 1-15. We started off by collecting TEST #2 (only half the class completed this assignment so make sure you get that done by Wednesday if you did not complete it already and please follow the directions stated in last Wednesday's blog entry below). We then moved on to discussing lesson 16 homework assignment and after answering some questions students worked on the lesson 17 warm-up. We went over lesson 17 which was all about multiplication based on repeated numbers and we focused on how sometimes it's easier to multiply instead of adding in those situations. We then moved onto lesson 18 where we focused on how to multiply 3 factors together and what to do when you have a missing addend in multiplication. We didn't get a lot of time to focus on the missing addend part so students may want to review that again at home.
Homework: Lesson 17 and 18 ODD questions for both lessons. Also, for those who have not completed their TEST #2, please make sure to do this as well. We started off class by checking homework and doing lesson 16 warm-up. Students then asked questions from their homework assignment and we went over them to clear up any confusion. After that, we moved onto lesson 16 which focuses on word problems dealing with separation (subtraction). We followed the equation format of "Some - some went away = what was left" and students practiced both writing and solving those equations based on word problems. Please make sure they know that finding the equation is just as important as being able to figure out the problem! Students had a tendency to just write out the answer instead of writing the original equation followed by how they solved for the answer :)
We then reviewed the topics that would be on test #2 and solved some problems similar to what they would see on the test. Homework: Lesson 16 Even questions. Also, please complete Test #2 found in the back of the Worksheets and Tests booklet. As always, students are not to use a calculator, notes, textbook, parents, etc. and they are to finish the test in one sitting. Please place the completed test in a sealed envelope and sign on the seal. Again, you do not need to grade the test, I will. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me! We went over lesson 12 and 13 homework and reviewed a bit of the material. We then moved onto talking about lesson 14 and how to read an addition problem as a subtraction problem and vice-versa (3+4=7 --> 7-4=3) and how to find missing addends by using that method. After going over the lesson practice, we moved onto lesson 15 and talked about the multiplication table as well as the terminology from the lesson. I assigned the homework and informed them that their next test (over lessons 1-10) will be homework for Wednesday (due Monday)!
Homework: Lesson 14 Evens and Lesson 15 Odd We started off class by reviewing the test and going over questions related to the test. I recorded their grades to allow them to keep their tests and show their progress in lessons 1-5. We then moved on to lesson 12 and spent time really going over the specific geometry terms they learned with lines, segments, points and rays. We went over lesson practice questions and then moved on to the concepts from lesson 13 which focuses on multiplication based on repeated addition and making sure to line up your numerical values when adding and subtracting dollars and cents.
Homework: Lesson 12 ODD questions only and Lesson 13 EVEN questions only Students turned in their tests for me and we went over a few of the topics to see if students had any questions. I will grade and return the tests to the students on Wednesday! We then had another discussion on the importance of getting your homework graded AND SIGNED in order to receive full credit on their homework and how it is their responsibility to get that done on time and if they don't then to get it done for the next class period to receive full credit.
We then spent the rest of the class period going over lesson 11 and focusing on how to write an equation based on a word problem given. We followed the format: Some + Some More = Total We really focused on the importance of writing the equation with the missing addend from the word problem. I felt students needed some more in class help with this topic so we worked on the practice set as well as the first three questions from their homework so they had more in-class practice. Homework: Lesson 11 Mixed Practice Odd questions only (1-3 done in class). Make sure to get it graded AND SIGNED :) We started class as usual by my checking their homework while they did the warm-up for lesson 10. Parents, thank you for keeping up with the grading of the assignments! I have informed the students that from here on out, if they do not have their assignment done in time to be graded and signed by their parents that they will only receive half credit for their work. It is THEIR responsibility to remind parents to grade if need be AND give you all enough time to grade their work :) Obviously, if they get the assignment graded and signed for the next class period I will happily give them full credit for their work. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the conversation we had in class.
We went over material in lesson 10 about missing addends and then worked on the Investigation 1 from their book which dealt with word problems. Homework: Lesson 10 mixed practice ODD questions only. FIRST TEST IS DUE ON MONDAY! Please complete Test 1 on page 215 in the test and worksheets booklet. Students are to complete the entire test in one sitting without the aide of notes/books/parents/calculator/etc. Please understand this is done so that I can get a true measure on how your student is doing in class and see if I need to make any adjustments to my teaching methods. When your student has finished their test, please place it in an envelope, seal it and sign along the seal to ensure that nothing was changed later. I will be the one to grade their test. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! We started class by doing lesson 8 warm-up and checking the homework for completion. Parents, please keep grading and signing your student's assignment every time! Most are doing this but some students are still showing up to class without a graded/signed assignment which will hurt your student in the long run if they don't have someone to check their work and make sure that they are doing the assignment correctly at home as we do not have time to go over their answers in class. Please remember that you can check the Solutions Booklet for quick and easy grading! If your student gets and answer incorrect, it would be helpful if you could either work it out with them, make suggestions, or simply ask them to bring it up in class so we can go over the question together.
We then went over the rules of subtraction in lesson 8 and did some practice questions from the book. After that, we talked about a subtraction algorithm to help them when dealing with larger numbers. Unfortunately we ran out of time to do in depth on lesson 9 so make sure that they are understanding the material and if not, please encourage them to ask questions in class so we can go over it on Wednesday :) Homework: Lesson 8 Mixed Practice Evens only and Lesson 9 Mixed Practice Odds only. MAKE SURE TO BRING YOUR TESTS/WORKSHEETS BOOKLET TO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY! We will need it for our first in-class Inquiry! Also, an in-home test will be assigned on Wednesday to complete at home and turn in the following Monday. This test will be over the material covered in lesson 1-5. I will email the test out to the parents on Wednesday evening. This is done to ensure that students do not see the test until the moment they take the test. This is NOT an open book/note test! Students are to do THEIR best and not have ANY outside help (that includes help from parents). This is the best way for me to gauge how they are doing in class. I will be the one to grade the tests as well. I will send out more instructions on how to administer/return the test when I email the test out on Wednesday. We began class by students working on Lesson 6 warm-up while I checked their homework. Parents, PLEASE make sure you are grading their work. We do not go through the questions unless the students ask to so. If you see a mistake on your student's assignment, please circle it so that they know to go back and make corrections. If they need your help, that's okay! However, I would like to be able to look at their graded assignment and see where they had trouble the first time around so that I know where they might need more help in the future. Please sign the graded assignment as well so that I know it has been properly graded :)
We then moved on the going over lessons 6 and 7 in class. Homework: Lesson 6 Mixed Practice--Odd questions only, Lesson 7 Mixed Practice--Even questions only. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns! Students work on Lesson 4 Warm-Up while I check and record homework assignment grades. Then, we go over the Lesson 4 New Concept and do the Lesson Practice before playing a quick dice game in which students compare numbers rolled. Then we begin Lesson 5 and go over the concept and practices before assigning homework.
Homework: Lesson 4 Mixed Practice (page 14) EVEN questions and Lesson 5 Mixed Practice (page 17) ODD questions only. For those of you looking for this post last night/today, my apologies! Weebly must have had a glitch and didn't officially post it once I updated the site....Below you will find our class summary as well as the homework.
______________________________ Students started off working independently on the Warm-Up for lesson 2 while I recorded their homework assignments and then we discussed the Warm-Up and began lesson 2. After completing the Practice Set for lesson 2 we moved on to Lesson 3 and completed learning the new material as well as practice set questions. Homework: Mixed Practice for Lesson 2 (page 6) ODD questions only, Mixed Practice Lesson 3 (page 10) EVEN questions only. Parents, please make sure to grade AND sign the assignments! :) |
