We started off class by checking homework and doing lesson 16 warm-up. Students then asked questions from their homework assignment and we went over them to clear up any confusion. After that, we moved onto lesson 16 which focuses on word problems dealing with separation (subtraction). We followed the equation format of "Some - some went away = what was left" and students practiced both writing and solving those equations based on word problems. Please make sure they know that finding the equation is just as important as being able to figure out the problem! Students had a tendency to just write out the answer instead of writing the original equation followed by how they solved for the answer :)
We then reviewed the topics that would be on test #2 and solved some problems similar to what they would see on the test. Homework: Lesson 16 Even questions. Also, please complete Test #2 found in the back of the Worksheets and Tests booklet. As always, students are not to use a calculator, notes, textbook, parents, etc. and they are to finish the test in one sitting. Please place the completed test in a sealed envelope and sign on the seal. Again, you do not need to grade the test, I will. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!

We went over lesson 12 and 13 homework and reviewed a bit of the material. We then moved onto talking about lesson 14 and how to read an addition problem as a subtraction problem and vice-versa (3+4=7 --> 7-4=3) and how to find missing addends by using that method. After going over the lesson practice, we moved onto lesson 15 and talked about the multiplication table as well as the terminology from the lesson. I assigned the homework and informed them that their next test (over lessons 1-10) will be homework for Wednesday (due Monday)!
Homework: Lesson 14 Evens and Lesson 15 Odd We started off class by reviewing the test and going over questions related to the test. I recorded their grades to allow them to keep their tests and show their progress in lessons 1-5. We then moved on to lesson 12 and spent time really going over the specific geometry terms they learned with lines, segments, points and rays. We went over lesson practice questions and then moved on to the concepts from lesson 13 which focuses on multiplication based on repeated addition and making sure to line up your numerical values when adding and subtracting dollars and cents.
Homework: Lesson 12 ODD questions only and Lesson 13 EVEN questions only Students turned in their tests for me and we went over a few of the topics to see if students had any questions. I will grade and return the tests to the students on Wednesday! We then had another discussion on the importance of getting your homework graded AND SIGNED in order to receive full credit on their homework and how it is their responsibility to get that done on time and if they don't then to get it done for the next class period to receive full credit.
We then spent the rest of the class period going over lesson 11 and focusing on how to write an equation based on a word problem given. We followed the format: Some + Some More = Total We really focused on the importance of writing the equation with the missing addend from the word problem. I felt students needed some more in class help with this topic so we worked on the practice set as well as the first three questions from their homework so they had more in-class practice. Homework: Lesson 11 Mixed Practice Odd questions only (1-3 done in class). Make sure to get it graded AND SIGNED :) We started class as usual by my checking their homework while they did the warm-up for lesson 10. Parents, thank you for keeping up with the grading of the assignments! I have informed the students that from here on out, if they do not have their assignment done in time to be graded and signed by their parents that they will only receive half credit for their work. It is THEIR responsibility to remind parents to grade if need be AND give you all enough time to grade their work :) Obviously, if they get the assignment graded and signed for the next class period I will happily give them full credit for their work. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the conversation we had in class.
We went over material in lesson 10 about missing addends and then worked on the Investigation 1 from their book which dealt with word problems. Homework: Lesson 10 mixed practice ODD questions only. FIRST TEST IS DUE ON MONDAY! Please complete Test 1 on page 215 in the test and worksheets booklet. Students are to complete the entire test in one sitting without the aide of notes/books/parents/calculator/etc. Please understand this is done so that I can get a true measure on how your student is doing in class and see if I need to make any adjustments to my teaching methods. When your student has finished their test, please place it in an envelope, seal it and sign along the seal to ensure that nothing was changed later. I will be the one to grade their test. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! We started class by doing lesson 8 warm-up and checking the homework for completion. Parents, please keep grading and signing your student's assignment every time! Most are doing this but some students are still showing up to class without a graded/signed assignment which will hurt your student in the long run if they don't have someone to check their work and make sure that they are doing the assignment correctly at home as we do not have time to go over their answers in class. Please remember that you can check the Solutions Booklet for quick and easy grading! If your student gets and answer incorrect, it would be helpful if you could either work it out with them, make suggestions, or simply ask them to bring it up in class so we can go over the question together.
We then went over the rules of subtraction in lesson 8 and did some practice questions from the book. After that, we talked about a subtraction algorithm to help them when dealing with larger numbers. Unfortunately we ran out of time to do in depth on lesson 9 so make sure that they are understanding the material and if not, please encourage them to ask questions in class so we can go over it on Wednesday :) Homework: Lesson 8 Mixed Practice Evens only and Lesson 9 Mixed Practice Odds only. MAKE SURE TO BRING YOUR TESTS/WORKSHEETS BOOKLET TO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY! We will need it for our first in-class Inquiry! Also, an in-home test will be assigned on Wednesday to complete at home and turn in the following Monday. This test will be over the material covered in lesson 1-5. I will email the test out to the parents on Wednesday evening. This is done to ensure that students do not see the test until the moment they take the test. This is NOT an open book/note test! Students are to do THEIR best and not have ANY outside help (that includes help from parents). This is the best way for me to gauge how they are doing in class. I will be the one to grade the tests as well. I will send out more instructions on how to administer/return the test when I email the test out on Wednesday. We began class by students working on Lesson 6 warm-up while I checked their homework. Parents, PLEASE make sure you are grading their work. We do not go through the questions unless the students ask to so. If you see a mistake on your student's assignment, please circle it so that they know to go back and make corrections. If they need your help, that's okay! However, I would like to be able to look at their graded assignment and see where they had trouble the first time around so that I know where they might need more help in the future. Please sign the graded assignment as well so that I know it has been properly graded :)
We then moved on the going over lessons 6 and 7 in class. Homework: Lesson 6 Mixed Practice--Odd questions only, Lesson 7 Mixed Practice--Even questions only. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns! |
