Sorry for the delay in posting this! On Wednesday we focused on some traditions associated with Día de los muertos. Students were able to try Pan de muerto if they wanted and make cempasuchiles out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners. We were also able to see a mural that two students' Aunt created in Tulsa for Día de los muertos which was really neat! At the end of class I handed out their "booklet" with information on day of the dead. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to fold it up so right now it's just a single sheet of paper. Students should be encouraged to color the pages and share their book with you all! Below you will find a video on how to fold the booklet.

Today we started off by 5 minutes of review time and then students took their test over seasons, weather and the calendar terms. We then moved on to talking about the Mexican holiday "Día de los muertos" which is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. We learned some terms associated with día de los muertos and with Halloween and then we watched a short video before going over the holiday in more detail.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdlL45ljkEY Homework: Complete the Venn diagram on Día de los muertos and Halloween. You can use the video that we watched in class (link given above) and the handout to give you some more ideas on what to write. If you want to look up more on your own--please do! We will have a celebration day in class on miércoles! BRING SCISSORS FOR CLASS ON WEDNESDAY!!! Today will be our big review day before the test on Monday. We'll start off with objetivo #5 which students will work on individually. Then we'll go over the weather map worksheet and sing our songs from this unit before playing TENGO with our flashcards. After TENGO we will do a listening practice in which I'll give some weather details as well as dates and students will have to tell me which season the description falls under by holding up a piece of paper with the season written on it. We will end class by playing "tarjetas de flash" and answering any questions students may have about the upcoming test.
Tarea: Keep reviewing for the test on Monday! Today we focused more on dates by working on our bell-work assignment in which they listened to me say 10 different dates and they had to write them out numerically (something they'll do for their test next Monday!). Then students interviewed each other and wrote down their classmates' names and birthdays which practiced introductions, numbers and dates. We ended class by looking at a weather map of South America and identifying what the weather was like in a few capitals. We will go over that assignment on Wednesday so make sure to finish it if you didn't have enough time to do so in class.
Tarea: Start studying for your test! Know dates (numbers 1-31, months), weather expressions and days of the week. Today we did our objetivo #3 which went over seasons and days of the week and then we sang a few of our songs to help with vocabulary retention. We then moved on to a worksheet on weather and seasons where students had to come up with sentences based on the picture they saw. We ended class by starting the homework--una crucigrama!
Tarea: Vocabulary crossword Today we started off class with bell-work #2 while I checked their homework. Many students forgot a part of their homework assignments and if that's the case for your student, please encourage them to bring it to class with them on Wednesday to get credit. We went over the homework and talked about common errors so they could fix them at home and then we played "tarjetas de flash." After that, we sang the "Sábado" song as well as "Qué tiempo hace hoy." I then handed out their homework assignment and students began to color it in before class was over.
copy_of_sabado.mp3 Tarea: Finish making your day of the week wheel! Color it in, cut out the wheel and attach it to your "Días de la semana" sheet with the brad provided. Please make sure your student adjusts the wheel every day and that it's somewhere where your student will see it on a daily basis (their desk, their door, the refrigerator, etc.). *Progress Reports will be going out this week (if everything goes according to plan!) so please be on the lookout for an email from me! :) Sorry, I couldn't get the accent mark on miercoles... :(
Students received their graded tests back and we went over any questions they had (they did a great job!). We then moved on to talking about the calendar with our first bell-work which went over the days of the week. Students then got their flashcards and we filled them out and lastly we worked on translating their weather song and then we sang it twice before ending class and then learned a short months of the year song. copy_of_que_tiempo_hace_hoy.mp3 months_of_the_year_song.m4a Homework: Please listen to the songs vocabulary recordings from the previous entry and practice your Spanish words. ALSO make sure you're updating your Weather Observation Sheet!!! Class started by students having 7 minutes or so to review for their test while I collected late/missing homework and answered questions. Students then completed their test over colors and emotions and we briefly went over the test after they all turned it in (I will hand back the tests on Wednesday). We then started our new unit on the calendar and weather. Students filled in their new vocabulary lists and we practiced saying the words in Spanish. I then handed out their long-term homework assignment that they are to work on EVERY day this week (Monday-Sunday!).
weather_vocabulary.m4a calendar_vocabulary.m4a Homework: Listen to the audio file on the vocabulary terms (will post later this evening) and practice saying the words out loud. Record the weather you observed today on your ¿Qué tiempo hace hoy? worksheet and fill it in tomorrow as well! Parents, please make sure students don't just look at the forecast and fill it in all at once--by having the students work on it every day this week, it ensures that they review the terms every day this week thus helping them to memorize the new words/phrases! Also, please make sure they are following ALL the directions :) Today was our review day for the in-class test on Monday. We started by doing a bell-work assignment which covered both colors and emotions vocabulary words and then students shared their comic-strips with each other and I checked the assignment for completion points. We played "tarjetas de flash" with our flashcards and then ended class by playing "TENGO"---my version of BINGO with the terms from the vocabulary list.
Homework: Make sure you have all late homework completed and turned in on Monday! If you turn it in after the test you will only receive half credit. STUDY for your test! Look over the activities we've done in class, vocabulary list, worksheets, listen to the audio files, etc. and bring something to work on quietly in class after you complete your test! If you have any questions, please let me know! Today we focused a lot on colors and emotions by working on a bellwork assignment, asking each other for their favorite colors (also practiced asking for someone's name and responding!) and then we graphed and counted how many people liked each color. We ended class by going over the homework assignment which includes making a comic strip in Spanish showing a conversation between 2 or more people (or things).
Tarea: The next TEST will be in class in a week! Please make sure you are studying and practicing your vocabulary! Also, the copier ink was running low this morning so I'm going to go ahead and include the directions to the comic strip just in case you cannot read it on your copy :) "Make a short story/comic strip in Spanish! Have students draw a conversation between 2 or more people. Make sure to include a greeting, ask how they are doing, response and a farewell! You can also include classroom expressions or any other vocabulary you find useful but only use the vocabulary you know :) Try and make sure your pictures reflect what it is your characters are saying!" Well technology wasn't our friend today but that didn't stop us from having a good class! We started off by checking the homework and playing "tarjetas de flash" a couple times. We then moved onto doing a color by numbers activity in which students had to recognized the written form of numbers 1-8 and color them the assigned color which was given to them in Spanish. We then had a worksheet in which students had to look at a picture of a person, write down how they would ask how that person was feeling and then write an appropriate response.
Tarea: Finish the color by numbers activity as well as the worksheet! We will check them in class on Monday so make sure to bring them to receive credit. Also, study your phrases and vocabulary and practice, practice, practice! Students turned in their previous bell-work activities and I passed back their very first test! Students should be very proud of how much they have learned in a month's worth of classes. We went through the test a bit and then we moved on to talking about our next unit--colors and emotions. Students started a new bell-work sheet for the next unit and answered questions on matching colors with their Spanish word. We then went over how to properly say the words on the vocabulary list and I taught the students a song I had learned in the 7th grade to help me remember the colors. Students sang the song with me and then we went through the flashcards for the unit.
colors_song.m4a Tarea: Cut out the flashcards and practice saying the words on your vocabulary list. See how many you can memorize! We started off class by reviewing for the test and answering any last minute questions. I then began the test after explaining the rules for taking tests (eyes on your own paper, raise hand when you have a question, no talking, etc.). Students completed their tests at their own pace and then we went over most of the answers once everyone was done and I had collected the tests. I then passed out their new vocabulary list on colors and emotions and we went over how to pronounce each word and what they translated to in English.
unit_2_vocabulary-colors_and_feelings.m4a Homework: Practice your new vocabulary and don't forget your former vocabulary either :) We started class talking about their upcoming test and what was going to be on it and then we started practicing for the test. We went over classroom phrases and the greetings/farewells expressions by playing "tarjetas de flash" with their flashcards. We then reviewed the alphabet and numbers by playing Battleship which seemed to be a big hit. We sang our alphabet and numbers songs and then played "Matamoscas" to review them some more.
Tarea: Study your phrases, alphabet and numbers! Test will be in class on Wednesday!! :) Today we focused a lot more on the alphabet as well as numbers 1-13. We had a bell-work assignment in which students practiced their greetings/farewell expressions and numbers and then students counted 1-31 with a partner and then as a whole class. We sang our Cuenta and Alfabeto songs and then switched gears to focusing on the alphabet by playing alphabet bingo....ABC Tengo!
Tarea: I have decided to move the test to next Wednesday. It will be an in-class test so make sure you come prepared! No notes will be allowed :) Please study classroom phrases, greetings and farewells, alphabet and numbers 1-31. Today we reviewed numbers 1-10 and focused more on the numbers 11-31. We played the game, "I have....who has...' in Spanish 'Tengo....Quien tiene...." with numbers 1=15 and then for our second round of the game students had to put themselves in order 1-13 based on the card they were given. They also had to do that all in Spanish! They did a great job! We then went over the rest of the numbers and played "Matamoscas" (flyswatter) game with random numbers 1-31 as a review of what we just went over. We also practiced the alphabet by doing a few activities.
Cuenta "rap": cuenta.mp3 Tarea: Your test is coming up! Next Monday you will have a test over classroom phrases, greetings/farewells, the alphabet and numbers 1-31. You will not need to spell them but you will want to make sure you can recognize them by sight and sound. Look over vocabulary lists, listen the audio recordings and practice singing your songs for a great review!! We will be reviewing for the test on Wednesday so come prepared! We started off class with a bell-work review on phrases that we are practicing so far while I checked for homework completion. Then we went over the bell-work and homework assignments. We then played the game "tarjetas de flash" with our flashcards so that students had practice associating the Spanish term with the image rather than associating the Spanish word with the English word. After playing the game twice, we then moved on to learning the Spanish alphabet (which has changed since 2014--crazy!). We learned a song (posted below) and went over numbers 1-10 in Spanish.
copy_of_el_alfabeto.mp3 numbers_1-31.m4a Tarea: Keep on practicing! Specifically, start using the flashcards to study your vocabulary, practice your numbers 1-10 in Spanish and start memorizing the Spanish alphabet. We start class with a bell-work assignment (individual then go over as a class). Then we sing the Buenas Tardes song and review some phrases. We then make flashcards some of the classroom phrases and greetings expressions. Lastly, we practice writing out greetings and farewells based on given situations on a Worksheet called "Saludos y Despedidas."
Tarea: Finish Activity 1 and 2, Color in and cut out flashcards and practice with them. Place flashcards in a Ziploc bag (or pencil bag...something to keep them in one place and easy to find) and place bag in your binder. Keep practicing those phrases and song by listening to the audio files in the previous entries! We started off class by greeting each other in Spanish and finishing up our Greetings worksheet. We then practiced pronouncing the Classroom Phrases as well. Afterwords, we took notes on how to say, "What's your name?" and "My name is" in Spanish. Students chose their own Spanish names and we played a game in which we practiced asking and answering the question, "What's your name?". Finally, we learned a new song to help remember some phrases you'd use when greeting someone! Listen to the song in the link below!
buenas_tardes_song.m4a Homework: Keep practicing your Classroom Phrases and Greetings words by reviewing the audio files from the previous week and practice our new song too! What a fun first day of school! I hope your student enjoyed their introduction to Spanish--it sure seemed like they did! Today we went over class expectations by reading the syllabus, we then started talking about classroom phrases they might want to say or that they might hear me saying on a regular basis and we filled in our classroom phrases vocabulary list. We then started filling in a greetings and farewells vocabulary list but ran out of time before completing it--we will complete this sheet in class on Monday. I will be posting some audio clips of how to correctly pronounce the phrases on both of those vocabulary sheets below!
Recordings: classroom_phrases.m4a greetings__vocabulary.m4a Tarea (homework!) Practice your classroom phrases by listening to the audio clips and say the phrases along with the recording (you can always pause or replay if it goes too fast). Please practice at least once a day so that you become familiar with these phrases. Have your parents read the syllabus and sign the bottom (you will be turning this in to me on Monday). |
